Where should you travel this summer with RIU?

9 June, 2022

Every year we ask ourselves the same question: where should we go on holiday in the summer? This year at RIU we suggest you opt for a classic and spend your days off in the Dominican Republic. To be precise, in Punta Cana. You’ve probably heard of this destination, popular for its waters and idyllic landscapes. Today we’ll give you some tips to help you become an expert in this paradise and make the most of your days here.

What to do in Punta Cana?

The truth is that you won’t be lacking ideas as this is a destination with an infinite number of possibilities. As we know that you can’t stay forever and discover them all, here are some of the must-do activities when you go to Punta Cana.

1. Visit heavenly beaches

If there’s one thing Punta Cana is famous for, it’s the white sandy beaches and turquoise waters that stretch along more than 32 km of coastline. And we can’t forget the famous coconut trees that reach all the way down to the sea and add a lovely tropical touch to the location. However, no matter how many photos you’ve seen, the truth is that none of them really do justice to the reality. Its beaches will win you over as soon as you step on them and feel the soft sand or take a refreshing dip. This combination, and the tan you’ll return with, will make you a new person.

Saona Island

One of our recommendations is the famous Saona Island where you will find kilometres of beaches with shallow waters and impressive flora and fauna. The island is part of the Eastern National Park and is famous for its mangroves, coral reefs and beaches surrounded by impressive palm trees.

2. Discover its cultural richness

We know it’s not all about beaches and cocktails in the sun. During the holidays we also need to keep our adventurous side happy. That’s why we recommend you visit towns like Altos de Chavón. This is a village built on the Chavón River and known as the island of artists because it is home to the School of Design and an amphitheatre where musical shows are held.

You can’t leave Punta Cana without visiting the capital of the Dominican Republic: Santo Domingo. Here you can walk through the historic walled centre and its famous colonial area, or have a coffee in Plaza España. There are many places in this beautiful city that will give you a taste of the culture and tradition of this Caribbean land.

3. Sample its cuisine

The best way to get to know a place is to taste its gastronomic delicacies. In the case of Punta Cana, you have to try its national dish: bandera dominicana. It is based on rice and beans, which are the main ingredients used in Dominican Republic cuisine. It also includes stewed meat, salad and fried green plantains. A perfect combination that will win over your palate.

Once you have tried its most typical dish, you will see that fish is the star of the menu in all the restaurants. This is because you are in a country that, thanks to its excellent location, enjoys a rich variety of seafood. Be sure to try the delicious lobsters, spider crabs, octopus and prawns.

And for dessert? Always remember to save room for the delicious sweet course. The absolute classic is the Dominican sponge cake. This dessert will melt in your mouth. It is filled with pineapple and topped with meringue. But, like everything, it has different versions, and you can also try it filled with dulce de leche or confectioners’ custard. Have we whetted your appetite?
