RIU increases the consumption of local produce at its Balearic hotels by an incredible 10%

At RIU Hotels & Resorts we have a clear aim: we want our hotels in the Balearic Islands not only to be places where guests can enjoy themselves to the fullest, but also a linchpin for the local community. In just two years, we have managed to double the amount of local products we buy, from 5.7% in 2023 to 10% in 2025. A milestone in our Proudly Committed sustainability strategy!

More local products, more flavour and better quality for our guests:

This year we have taken a big step forward by including two star products on our local shopping list: wine and ice cream, which are added to the classics such as water, vegetables and fruit. So now the kitchens and buffets in our six Balearic Islands hotels are filled with 202 local products. But this is not only a plus for our guests’ palates, it is also a boost to local producers and a further step towards reducing our carbon footprint.

Sustainable purchasing: the heart of our strategy

Since 2024, our new Sustainable Purchasing department has been working hard to ensure that our procurement is responsible and complies with strict ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) criteria. This team not only assesses and coordinates, it also promotes sustainable policies among our suppliers. It’s a team effort!

At RIU we believe in the importance of our supply chain sharing our commitment to sustainability and responsible management. That is why, last year, we signed an agreement with Achilles, a globally recognised expert in supply chain risk management and ESG criteria.

Much more than complying with regulations

We know that Balearic legislation stipulates that hotels must use a certain proportion of local products, but at RIU we go much further. While the regulations require 4% for 4 and 5 star hotels, we are striving for an impressive 10%, making it clear that we are committed to our environment and to global sustainability.
