RIU celebrates World Environment Day at all its hotels

16 June, 2017

To celebrate World Environment Day, on 5 June, all the RIU hotels organised activities to promote actions to protect the environment.

The main theme for World Environment Day this year was connecting people with nature. RIU hotels organised workshops, games and activities attuned to this theme.

And, to coincide with this very special date, RIU has launched a fund-raising campaign to benefit Planet-for-the-Planet. This NGO was created in 2007 at the initiative of a nine-year old German boy. Today it’s led by thousands of children who develop reforestation projects all over the world. The donations collected at all the company’s hotels will be dedicated to tree planting. The goal of the NGO is to plant one thousand billion trees all over the world by 2020.

To promote this initiative among our guests, each hotel organised a series of activities.

At the Riu Palace Madeira, guests helped with beach clean-up around the hotel and planted trees in the gardens.

At the Riu Playacar, the animation team organised activities with kids using recycled materials.

At the Riu Palace Tenerife, the power was shut off briefly to raise awareness of the importance of energy conservation in protecting the environment. The funds raised will be dedicated to the creation of a turtle sanctuary.

At the Riu Yucatan, on the Mayan Riviera, our colleagues personalised recycled yoghurt containers with guests to be used later to plant seedlings of the Chit palm tree, a species in danger of extinction.

At the Riu Sri Lanka, all guests and employees were encouraged to participate in a thorough clean-up of the Ahungalla beach.

At the Riu Creole hotel, in Mauritius, elementary school children heard a talk on the importance of protecting the environment. And, the funds raised were donated to Le Morne Heritage, an organisation dedicated to preserving the park where the RIU hotels on the island are located.
